The Sordid History of Fuzzymoto:
(please note some of the dates might not have been entirely accurate due to damaged short/long term memory)
1990:
Ham goes to Vegas to see Grateful Dead, winds up getting sucked into a gambling binge, misses the show, and has a moment of clarity (the eye of the storm in a drunken hurricane) and decides to spend his thousand dollar winnings on a red, beat-up Fender Precision Bass, a Peavy Amp with a cool underwater chorus effect, and a new Blake surfboard that delaminates three weeks later.
1991:
Brent shows Ham how to play 12-bar blues
1992:
Ham and his roommate Ken Lau learn three Velvet Underground songs, that Brent showed them how to play. Inspired Ken and Ham go to New York and coincidentally happen to see the Grateful Dead for the first time at Madison Square Garden. It takes them a few years to realize what they've witnessed.
1994:
Brent and Ham start playing long improvised blues jams together and some simple Dead songs. Brent joins a band while going to UCLA. They play funk grooves. Meanwhile, out in Tuscon Arizona, Troy (also known as Greenbean because of his mixed Irish/Mexican heritage) fronts a heavy metal band called Macoroni.
1995:
After six years Ham graduates UCI, Lifeguards for another summer, and then joins the governors surf team (Unemployment). Brent moves to Santa Cruz and starts a funky jam band of an undisclosed name.
1996:
Greenbean starts his own band called "Waiting for George".
1997:
Ham moves to LA and starts playing with a very short lived hair band with a Canuck, a crazy drummer that only wants to play Bowie, and a Japanese dude named Yushi - They were called Intravenous Cadillac.
1998:
Ham and Brent meet up after a long while and realize that they know a lot of the same songs. Inbetween surf sessions, they start informally jamming together again. "Waiting for George" turns into "Kid Icarus" after the like-named Nintendo game.
1999:
Brent returns to Huntington Beach. Him and Ham resume jamming. Ham meets fellow Deadhead drummer Gonzo, who later becomes Hydrophonic's drummer. Brent and Ham meanwhile begin piecing together musicians to form a band with Kaiahua on drums, Ham on bass, Brent on lead guitar and backing vocals, old friend Lonny on rhythm guitar, and the legendary Matt King Karl on vocals. They play Dead, Floyd, Meters, Toots, and Marley. "Kid Icarus" gets a letter in the mail that there will be an imminent lawsuit if they don't change their name. Thus "Second Hand Rose" was born who performed a Halloween show in front of three thousand. Afterwards they split up and parted ways for school.
2000:
Kaiahua becomes lost to an addiction to kite surfing, Gonzo steps in to replace him dropping a couple grand on a kit. Matt King Karl retires, Ham moves back to Huntington Beach, The band becomes Hydrophonic with the addition of Brian (Giggles) on keyboards who subsequently introduces the band to the UFO. With the aid of good friends "Circle" and "Thalamus Flynt," "Hydrophonic" start playing at Tubby's Tavern. They also play Newport Fish Company for the Newport Beach Lifeguards. Greenbean moves to Huntington Beach and becomes a Lifeguard.
2001:
Lonny drops out of the band to start law school, and the band tries the infamous "Rich" as a singer. They play a few unsuccessful gigs together.
2002:
Ham returns to Lifeguarding where he meets Greenbean. The two instantly meld musically. They learn a few songs together, and Greenbean and Ham play a few parties together for drunken lifeguards. After a fateful back-alley barbecue where Greenbean steps in to front Hydrophonic, Rich is hauled away by an angry mob of alley cats. Greenbean, after a summer of living out of his truck, moves to New Orleans for a year at LSU. Gonzo gets his girlfriend pregnant, gets married, and drops out of the band to "get serious" so Brent, Ham, and Giggles remain. Singer-less. Drummer-less.
2003:
Greenbean relocates back to OC after a stint in New Orleans playing Irish Folk Music. He is welcomed into Hydrophonic. Now all they need is a drummer. A search that turns out to be the major task of the year. They audition a few drummers, and wind up with a mechanic. They play a few gigs at King Neptunes and Arriba's in HB together but aren't entirely happy with the mechanic. This is where Kurt, the human clock appears. Friends with Brent and Lonny's neighbors, he provides the band with impeccable timing. After a top secret name-changing convention, Hydrophonic unanimously becomes the Backyard Barbecue Band. They return to Tubby's Tavern as the BBB.
2004:
After one gig and a few raised eyebrows, the band drops the Backyard Barbecue Band moniker to become the much more acceptable and safe "Fuzzymoto." They play gigs at Tubby's, Perq's in HB, Fitzgeralds, and Hennessey's in Dana Point. They also buy a new PA with money earned playing as a band. Now Greenbean can hear himself. Brent purchases a new amp so now he is even louder and cleaner. So now Fuzzymoto is poised to rule the world.
